About

Birtwistle Fine Art was established by James Astley Birtwistle in 2022. The gallery deals in paintings and works on paper from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, with a particular focus on French and British art.

James began his career as a painting and antique frame conservator in Florence and as an Old Master painting researcher at the prestigious Cabinet Turquin in Paris. He spent a decade with the London firm John Mitchell Fine Paintings, before establishing his own gallery business. He has bought, sold, cleaned, installed and valued hundreds of paintings for private clients and institutions. He is the acting art advisor to the Household Cavalry Foundation, managing their collection at Knightsbridge Barracks and Horse Guards. This broad experience handling and presenting works of art allows him to offer confident advice on all facets of picture ownership. With the advantage of a deep understanding of the physical make-up of paintings James seeks quality works of art that have endured both aesthetically and physically.
